1/12/23 Analyzing writing Hello guys, how do feel we are now at the end of the semester? Anaylsing children’s writing is a new experience for me, I remember my first year in the teaching profession I was asked to analyse students writing, with little or no knowledge. As I read, I restructured and edited their writing. However, the lectures on analysing a child’s writing made me realize that I did not give children the opportunity to develop their writing style, in that I expected them to structure their writing to mirror mine. I now understand when analysing someone’s writing some specific writing traits must guide this process, such as sentence fluency, word choice, organization, voice, presentation, and ideas. Understanding the writing convention makes analysing simpler because there are specific traits that can be focused on. The acronym VIPCOWS is vital in the writing process. 18/11/ 23 The writing workshop The writing workshop is a method of instruction that hinges on the process of writing. The writing workshop is an important part of an effective teaching approach. Although this technique is not new to me, it is important to understand the principles underpinning the writing workshop are fundamental for students to become independent writers. Writing is not a one-shot process, hence about 70% of a writer’s time should be spent on planning. Therefore, to accomplish productive writing teaching must be happening throughout the writing process. Also, the use of mini-lessons can be employed to help clarify doubts on the topic. Similarly, students can share their writing with their peers who can provide constructive feedback. Have you tried to convince your listeners or readers to believe in an opinion or idea that you may have, then you intend to persuade? Persuasive writing is not new to me I remember when I was at the primary school level, I wrote a persuasive piece on “students should not be beaten for arriving to school” It was a loved piece by my class teacher. However, the acronyms PEEL and PIE were new to me in persuasive writing. PEEL which means Point, Elaborate, Elaborate, and then Link all your thoughts while the acronym PIES spells out Point, Information, Elaborate, and summarize/ restate. Applying these techniques in your writing will help you to structure your paragraphs in a clear and concise sequence. November 5 th Writing Traits The six plus one (6+1) writing traits are rooted in the art of writing. All writing has key ingredients, voice, ideas, presentation, conventions, organization, word choice, and sentence fluency that bear the acronym V.I.P C.O.W.S. Most of the writing traits are not new to me but the combination of the traits are new to me. The lecturer allowed us to facilitate our own learning by getting into groups to research and present on various aspects of writing traits. At the end of all the presentations, our lecturer summarized the writing traits. These key components provide writers with a common understanding to compose, assess, and revise their writing. Writers workshop 29/10/23 Hey, blogging family, I hope you all are doing okay, and conquering assignments and exams as they come👍 This academic week was the shortest for the semester so far, as a result, much content was not covered. However, Mrs. Lazarus, ensured we gained new content knowledge by introducing the writing workshop. The writing workshop contains four (4) elements: Teaching time, writing time, conferencing, and sharing time. The strategy puts together everything I have learned about narrative writing like writing ideas, using connections, word choice, and developing a voice are all part of the essence of narrative writing. Explode a moment/ zoom in strategy This week’s class was filled with new concepts and content, that created a state of disequilibrium, however, as the week progressed the information began to fit into my schemas. Have you ever wondered why, writing is such a difficult skill, which is developed over time? Learning to write is critical for emergent writers. This stage should permit early writers limitless opportunities to scribble and draw their stories. Then allow them to share what they have encrypted their ideas because they understand print conveys a message, as a result, they will pretend to read aloud. Over time, there would be a progressive stride from randomly scribbling to a more controlled scribble. Hello there! I am at it again, in this week’s class we focused on Narrative writing. Narrative writing tests one’s ability to express their thoughts and experiences compellingly and creatively, yet it follows an inflexible structure. While narrative writing is not entirely new to me, it was an honour to restore some memory on the structure and format and learn new perspectives of narrative writing. The class sessions on narrative writing made me realize that the responsibility of a narrative writer is to make the reader feel connected to the topic through the use of figurative language, suspense, conflict, and sensory details to paint a vivid picture as writers uniquely tell their stories.
