Analyzing writing     

Hello guys, how do feel we are now at the end of the semester?

Anaylsing children’s writing is a new experience for me, I remember my first year in the teaching profession I was asked to analyse students writing, with little or no knowledge. As I read, I restructured and edited their writing.

However, the lectures on analysing a child’s writing made me realize that I did not give children the opportunity to develop their writing style, in that I expected them to structure their writing to mirror mine. I now understand when analysing someone’s writing some specific writing traits must guide this process, such as sentence fluency, word choice, organization, voice, presentation, and ideas. Understanding the writing convention makes analysing simpler because there are specific traits that can be focused on. The acronym VIPCOWS is vital in the writing process. The many in-class practices have aided my comprehension in identifying the trait/s that stand out or lack expounding organizing and saying why or how that trait is good or needs developing by referring to the writing traits. 

 The writing traits will be introduced and explained to my students before we begin the writing process, the introduction of these traits will help students analyse their writing before submitting it.

  1. Hi Lecia, I thought I was the only one correcting students writing when reading.however, I am happy that with the new information we received we will do better. And I do agree that the in class activities helped tremendously in anaysing and identifying the traits or lack there of in writing.

    3. Truth be told, there was a time when we all didn't know. The season of growth must embrace us all. From the unknown to the known we all must go. Am just over the moon I had this opportunity to groom upstairs and pack some new books onto the shelf. What I knew before was getting outdated, if you get my drift. lol :) # level up

  2. Yes indeed the bitter-sweet moment has arrived that culminates our journey, but this is only the beginning of a new voyage. A new horizon to look upon is already glaring in the distance and, “strive we must to reach it.”
    On another note, it is nice to see that there was a transition for you, as you alluded to the fact that you edited students' work with limited knowledge in the past. Now that you’ve learned and understand the writing traits, you’re better equipped to guide students during the writing process.
    Know that you are not alone in this, my knowledge and experience in the field was vastly limited as well. Before knowing about the traits, I focused so much on my student’s conventions, unintentionally stifling their ideas, and was unaware until now.
    The newfound knowledge has blessed us both with the “know-how” and ability to facilitate a more conducive writing experience for all our kids to become ideal writers.
