The writing workshop

The writing workshop is a method of instruction that hinges on the process of writing. The writing workshop is an important part of an effective teaching approach. Although this technique is not new to me, it is important to understand the principles underpinning the writing workshop are fundamental for students to become independent writers.

Writing is not a one-shot process, hence about 70% of a writer’s time should be spent on planning. Therefore, to accomplish productive writing teaching must be happening throughout the writing process. Also, the use of mini-lessons can be employed to help clarify doubts on the topic. Similarly, students can share their writing with their peers who can provide constructive feedback. Through it all, writing is a lonely process and it is of great significance for the message the writer intends to share is the message that is interpreted by the readers.

It will be of great privilege for me to educate my students on the writing workshop because students can only become better writers when they write frequently. Our mantra will be ‘write more, write better, be happier.’

These strategies will be mounted on the wall of the classroom as a reminder when revising and editing their writing.

  1. Yes Lisia, I do agree that the writing workshop is a most essential strategy teachers can employ in the classroom because it aids students in developing and mastering their writing skills. You made a most important point when you mentioned the fact that, “writing is not a one-shot”. Indeed, it is a most tedious, and repetitive process, however, the monotonous nature of writing is what aids the author/students in mastering the craft. Eventually, with focus and consistency honing their writing ability, they will learn to integrate the writing traits in such a captivating manner that their compositions will beckon the reader’s attention with every word.
Lastly, I also approve of the use of the acronym and chart, your plan to integrate it into the classroom will be a fitting reminder for students to reference as they wade through the waters of writing.

  2. Understanding/ Acknowledging writing is not a one-shot, which makes that tedious process of writing approachable and accomplishing. I do believe when children understand their writing traits their writing will definitely beckon a reader's attention.
