Writers workshop      29/10/23

Hey, blogging family, I hope you all are doing okay, and conquering assignments and exams as they come👍

This academic week was the shortest for the semester so far, as a result, much content was not covered. However, Mrs. Lazarus, ensured we gained new content knowledge by introducing the writing workshop. The writing workshop contains four (4) elements: Teaching time, writing time, conferencing, and sharing time.

The strategy puts together everything I have learned about narrative writing like writing ideas, using connections, word choice, and developing a voice are all part of the essence of narrative writing. What stood out to me was the teaching time because at that time one thing is taught, during that time it is possible to check for prerequisite knowledge before delving into the content. We found a partner and shared our narrative piece, each partner listened and provided feedback that could be used to enhance your writing. Similarly, working in small groups, collaborating, and sharing are great ways to learn and support each other. Also, we listened keenly as one of our colleagues shared her narrative piece, and our lecturer highlighted and shared aspects of the writing that needed to be improved and congratulated exceptional sections. Other colleagues chimed in the same order, many of my colleagues were expressing frustration with blogging, and the issues seemed to be ending. Then boom! a colleague found a solution and explained and demonstrated how to solve the ongoing problem, which was a sigh of relief, Working collaboratively can move a mountain

Introducing the writer's workshop to my students would be a must because it gives them a voice. The writer's workshop will also help students to understand that writing is not a one-shot but happens over time.

A short video on the writer workshop. This video will aid in further understanding the writer's workshop.

  1. It was rather refreshing to see that you also gained the same insight I did in realizing the critical importance of sharing in the writing workshop. A fresh perspective is of paramount importance to improving/ fostering literacy abilities.
It also evident that our colleague sharing her technical expertise outside of the writing workshop was most welcomed and aided most of the class with navigating issues in the tech. So you see, sharing does work wonders does it?
