Hello there! I am at it again, in this week’s class we focused on Narrative writing. Narrative writing tests one’s ability to express their thoughts and experiences compellingly and creatively, yet it follows an inflexible structure. While narrative writing is not entirely new to me, it was an honour to restore some memory on the structure and format and learn new perspectives of narrative writing.

The class sessions on narrative writing made me realize that the responsibility of a narrative writer is to make the reader feel connected to the topic through the use of figurative language,  suspense, conflict, and sensory details to paint a vivid picture as writers uniquely tell their stories. There are five components of narrative writing they are as follows: characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution.

What stood out most for me is narrative writing follows a clear chronological order which makes the essay easy to follow, this sequential order distinguishes narrative writing from other forms of writing. Planning is a critical aspect when writing, and our lecturer often reminds us to plan, plan, plan, and proper planning will allow you to hook and entice your readers to continue to read. Then our lecturer used some descriptive words to describe a situation that takes place in a school then allowed us to form groups to discuss a solution. On completion, we shared our ideas with the rest class.

Narrative writing is a powerful format for an emergent writer because it can help them organize their thoughts and ideas clearly because of its structure. I can’t wait to introduce this type of writing to my students and I know with proper guidance they will master and enjoy narrative writing. Also, I will allow students to bring life to their writing by choosing their topics.

  1. You made a comment that resonates with me, you said "the responsibility of the narrative author is to make the reader connect", that is a very true statement. However, gluing your reader/audience to the print is quite a task, your words and ideas must be woven together in such a captivating manner that it beckons the reader to want to know more. Like you rightly said lower down in your blog, "planning is critical', I believe it is as well. I also believe that planning is the key to formulating interesting characters, drama-inspiring plots, page-turning conflicts, and awe-inspiring resolutions. As you said "planning, planning, planning”, is the key to making the words of the narrative piece come alive.

  2. Emilio, gluing your print to the print may take thousands of attempts, but trust me when it is done it gives the author a sense of achievement and accomplishment.

  3. Yes Lisia, it was really an exciting class. Narrative writing is indeed a powerful tool, and your enthusiasm to introduce it to your students is fantastic. Giving them the freedom to choose their topics will surely make the learning experience even more engaging. I am just as excited as you are to introduce this style of writing to my students when I return to the classroom. 🤭

  4. Hi Lecia, I am happy to hear that narrative writing wasnot new to you but restore memories unlike me. I know that when we write we need to capture the readers interest, drawing them in like a moth to a flame and you honestly captured my interest with that sentence. As my first draft of my narrative piece was lacking some of the key components you mentioned.
Another important point you mentioned is planning. planning is key to ensuring that our reader are left wanting more.
I am happy to see you plan to use the advice given in class to allow your students to choose their topics, a task i believe will be more meaningful to them. All the best with introducing narrative writing to your students i to am excited to introduce to my students.

    until next time happy blogging.

    1. I am sure the knowledge you have gained through the different lectures have made you more competent than you were, so much so that you can now reflect on your own writing to make the necessary adjustments. Yes, girl! planning can be tedious but trust me it is essential for getting quality output in your writing. From my experience, I take time to plan and the results are always fantastic.

  5. Hi Lecia, I also gained alot of insights. For one, grabbing my readers attention. I believe that we all can be great writers once we take the necessary steps in doing so. How was your writing before engaging in this course?

  6. It was fair to fine with a few scattered showers but I can safely say these scattered showers are about to stop. Knowledge gained should be knowledge put into practice.
