Explode a moment/ Zoom- in strategy

Explode a moment/ zoom in strategy

This week’s class was filled with new concepts and content, that created a state of disequilibrium, however, as the week progressed the information began to fit into my schemas.

Have you ever wondered why, writing is such a difficult skill, which is developed over time?  Learning to write is critical for emergent writers. This stage should permit early writers limitless opportunities to scribble and draw their stories. Then allow them to share what they have encrypted their ideas because they understand print conveys a message, as a result, they will pretend to read aloud.

Over time, there would be a progressive stride from randomly scribbling to a more controlled scribble. The early writers will be guided as they plan their writing, although they would be dependent on the alphabetic principle. Writing about personal interests becomes a priority, however, these writers do not give much detail.

With the confidence and capability developing writers would improve, in that they can express themselves better. Their Imagination will inspire them to pen their ideas but the ideas are not sequenced and their connectives are limited. Moreover, a combination of conventional and phonetic spelling and the frequent but incorrect use of punctuation marks will impact the writing.

Finally, the fluent writers will correctly understand the use of sentence formation, and correctly use punctuation and spell words, which gives the writing a voice. It is at that level that writers can comfortably use the exploding moment/zoom-in strategy because they no longer crowd all of their thoughts together. This strategy allows the author to slow down a moment of ‘freeze time’ to explode a moment, one task at a time in sequence. When a moment explodes it builds interest, and paints a vivid picture, thereby creating that zoom-in method in anticipation of what is to come. The use of sensory details, talk to self and dialogue help captivate the reader’s attention.

This strategy was ‘well sold’ by the lecturer, through the use of real-life connections, films, and pieces of literature, which followed by the discussions and explanations, was not shy of her ability, thereby creating that rich conceptual understanding. My students will be introduced to this strategy, and I know they will be excited to explode a moment. They will be given tremendous opportunities to experience the many different ways authors and film producers use that strategy to captivate different times exploding a moment. Then they will be allowed to explode for a moment.

This short video can be used as a guide to assist you in helping students further understand the strategy to explode a moment.

  1. I had a moment chuckling to myself when I read what you said about emergent writers, “at this stage, they should be permitted limitless opportunities to scribble and draw their stories”. You do know it’s the walls, fridge, television, even the dog might get scribbles if given the chance. The house will be the writing page. As hectic and stressful as that stage might be, I think we both can agree that it is most important. Maybe a little structure may help, notice I said, “may”, somewhere in the house may still get a lash a pencil.
I appreciate the way you holistically captured some of the various important topics covered in writing so far. The walkthrough and explanation of the stages of writing that move from scribblers to fluent writers was a good review for me. Writers that integrate writing strategies like; showing details and exploding the moment. It was an admirable way of encapsulating the vital writing skills that students need to develop throughout the writing process.

  2. Hey Lisia, while Emilio is chuckling to himself about your point on emergent writers ''limitless opportunities to scribble and draw their stories'' I am holding my head as my daughter is at the very early age where she scribbles on everything. Nothing is off limits and I do try to implement a little structure however, it works for all of 2-5 seconds. And i do agree with both you and Emilio that it is the most important stage.
It is important to note that incorporating the writing process and exploding moments when we write can help to enhance the quality of our work. I do wish you all the best in introducing to your students as with these guidelines and steps you should expect quality pieces from your students.

    until next time...

  3. Malanda, I can imagine how you sprint across the different rooms from time to time to prevent those '' messy'' designs. Oh yes, incorporating the writing process and exploding moments when we write can help to enhance the quality of our work.
