Topic: All about me

The All About Me book was an interesting but unusual way to introduce a class because it does not follow the established routine of standing and introducing yourself.

The All About Me book is a well-structured booklet. The teacher will model what the book will entail, and then give the students sample booklets so that they will have an idea of what the finished product will look like. Then they brainstormed the information for their booklet, and guided questions were given.

The book was done in an organized pattern that was easily followed.  Interestingly it consisted of simple sentences and drawings for example, my name is Sofia and the child will draw a picture to depict herself those who are not strong writers or cannot write sentences on their own will be given a  partially completed booklet and they will write their names in the space provided or draw a picture in the space provided, isn’t that strategy fascinating because although students may have varying abilities they can all do the same activity.

For future reference, the child can share the information in their book with the person sitting closest to them to gain a little more confidence in what they did. I particularly liked this All About Me book because if a child is shy he or she will not have to feel pressured to share about themself orally, but with their thoughts being more organized they will feel more comfortable sharing what is written.

This All About Me booklet can be done over a period taking into consideration the ability of the children. This is a good activity for novice students because they will need lots of scaffolding since they will be writing for the first time. The significance of this activity is to motivate students to write because they are writing on topics that they are comfortable with and as a result, they can expand their vocabulary.  Hence, the All About Me booklet can be used across the curriculum because students can summarize what they have learned and can be creative when constructing their booklet. I will definitely use it in my classroom because I have so much fun creating my book. Recommending it to my other colleagues is a must!

  1. The point you made on the differentiation potential that exists when doing the "All about me" book was brilliant. As a teacher the varying academic abilities of your students should be at the forefront of your mind.
Another point you mentioned was in relation to the cross curricular opportunity the "all about" books makes possible. All about books can be written in every subject, this fact can promote significant literacy developmental potential for students. Writing about topics covered in class throughout the term would be a grand idea, for example, an all about mammals book, or an all about fractions book. This would be an excellent way to promote the reading and writing skills across all the academic areas.

  3. Lecia and Emilio I am in agreement with the ''All About" books being used across the curriculum another point to add is that the teacher can use it as a form of assessment. if it's implemented across each grade I believe it can also act as a pre-requisite knowledge as the students move from the different grades.
let me know what you guys think? if I am making sense or if I need to engage in All about....... books myself.

  4. Yes, it can be used as a summative assessment to check students' understanding after a unit or lesson plan. Explain how it can be used as pre-requisite knowledge.

  5. You know what? that is a brilliant idea, a booklet that holds student direct understanding of a lesson they covered in their own words. I definitely agree with both, firstly, it could be used as prerequisite knowledge for the new grade teacher to be aware of what they covered/understand and secondly, it could be used as a summative assessment that be used at the units completion to depict what students leant. That would definitely be something great. :)

  6. wow, great ideas on how the All About books can be useful across the curriculum, as perquisite knowledge and summative. I have never thought of it as a summative assessment, thanks much. I am definitely looking forward in trying it out. Also are you guys considering using it as a summative assessment in your classroom? It was nice stopping by.
Lecia, good insight on the All about book. What I liked most was when you mentioned it will motivate students to write. I totally agree with you, if this strategy will aid students in writing, as teachers we need to teach it in our classes. I am looking forward in using it and can't wait to see my students reactions. Lets keep inspiring each other so that we can enhance writing across the curriculum.
